I drew this image for the Akira 2001 poster competition that was run to celebrate the DVD release of the film in that year. I won the 'Most Original' category with this image and supposedly won a DVD player. Nine years later Pioneer have yet to deliver (not that I'm bitter...or need a sixth device that can play DVDs).
With this design I was trying to show Tetsuo's fracturing sanity. It was a fluke that the position of his arms meant that the blurred repetition looked like a DNA strand. The faint barcode behind the lettering was scanned from the Akira VHS.
